Diagnosis didn’t end the run: Congratulations 2014 Global Heroes

2014 Global Heroes

Running long distances was never supposed to be easy, and it becomes even harder when your body becomes a barrier. For runners diagnosed with medical conditions, this is a reality. It’s so inspiring to see those impacted by medical technology overcome everyday hurdles, and each year, Medtronic hosts the Global Heroes program to celebrate some of these individuals’ big accomplishments.

The program brings 25 runners from around the world who benefit from medical technology, from insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, to pacemakers and neurological devices, to Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota to run in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, or Medtronic TC 10 Mile. While each individual’s story, athletic abilities, and goals may vary, each Global Hero brings inspiration to the starting line. By sharing their stories, we cheer the accomplishment and inspire others to take action in their own lives. The selected runners receive race entry and travel expenses for themselves and a guest.

The diabetes community has continuously had a strong representation from extraordinary runners - Celine Parent, Lindsey Burch, and Lindsay Gossack to name a few, and this year is no exception. In this year’s 2014 run, we have runners from the diabetes community representing the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Colombia!

Stop by the Global Heroes webpage to learn more about the Global Heroes program and this year’s athletes, or visit the Global Heroes Facebook page to follow their successes. If you happen to be in the Twin Cities, come by the marathon on October 5th to join the Medtronic crew in cheering on these amazing racers!

If you can’t make it to the Twin Cities, cheer on an individual or a team by submitting a “good luck” message. These messages will be written on signs that will appear throughout the race course and Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon weekend events.
